iPhone rip-off

Dear Steve,
I am a great fan of your company's products and in fact own quite a few of them. I was also thrilled when you announced the iPhone and planned on getting one - maybe not immediately when it was available but certainly at some point - now I'm not so sure about that anymore. Here is why:
While I welcome Apple's general idea of price and value as I am really sick and tired of the whole cheapo attitude we have around here ('Geiz ist geil'), I have come to think that with the iPhone you have crossed a line. Selling the product at a premium price is fine but forcing your customers into monthly fees just to get something that they might not even need is clearly ripping them off. I spend maybe 10 minutes on my mobile phone per month (which I know is not representative, although I think I'm not alone) and I'm in close vicinity to WLAN hotspots I own or have access to almost all the time. So why would I spent a minimum of 50.-€ to get lots of call time and unlimited data? Yet an iPhone would still be useful to me even without spending all day using it as a phone - wasn't that part of the idea?
Also, now that there is a 16GB version, I would actually be fored to get another contract in case I already had the 8GB version but for some reason needed the 16GB version - that is just outragous and basically punishes your most dedicated followers. So unless that changes for the better from a loyal customers perspective I won't buy one (which I know doesn't really hurt Apple or yourself).
Yours truly
Jörg
P.S.: I'm also really pissed off that the iSight never got updated after being taken off market and probably never will ...
